Folio 199: Stormount to Weymouth. Sartine has written strongly to Franklin and he and Deane are `much confounded'. Franklin has written to Maurepas promising good behaviour and asking permission to stay in France. The king has reprimanded Sartine. The French ministry may be sincere but may be playing for time till the fishermen are back from Newfoundland, the fleet arrives from Martinique, timber arrives from the Baltic and the Spanish fleet has arrived. Britain must get ready her fleet.
