Folio 181: Stormont to Weymouth. Between hearing the paper read to him and taking notes [see f.174], he talked with Vergennes. After expressing satisfaction at the king's reply, he referred to American activities at Le Havre, Nantes and Cherbourg and to Cunningham.Vergennes countered with complaints of injustice to French shipping, sent to Noailles, and in particular the case of a ship condemned in Dominica. They discussed trade off the coast of North America and between the islands. Stormont protested at French ships taking false lettres de mer, taking clearance for the French islands but going direct to North America, citing the Mercury. He said Franklin was an intriguer, who would sow dissention in France. He next discussed with Maurepas the 3 privateers, Franklin, Marseilles and the Dunkirk cutter.
