Folio 142: Stormont to Weymouth. He spoke to Vergennes in similar terms to f.136. Vergennes admitted the irregularity of Argout's, conduct. Bouillé was correcting the situation and Prégent was ordered to return to Europe. Storment then complained at events at Dunkirk [see f.124]. He referred to American activities at Nantes and Bordeaux and to ships arming there and loading arms for the rebels. In particular he mentioned the Reprisal and his previous protests. Stormont then went on to speak as ordered by his court. The king desires peace but cannot sacrifice his honour or the interests of his trading subjects by submitting to a nation so strongly professing its desire for peace while helping the rebels. If this help continues `every friend to humanity will lament the consequences that must follow'. He quoted a summary compiled from American sources of the rebels' view of French policy and their own aims, namely: that France wished to help the rebels secretly and the rebels hoped to involve France in war with Britain. Vergennes promised to order the removal of all Frenchmen from privateers, which would be ordered to leave the ports of France.
