Folio 177: Stormont to Weymouth. He is not hopeful of redress for the 2 snows [f.165] as, in such cases, the French always prevaricate. Vergennes referred to an incident off Florida between a French merchant ship and 2 English privateers. Stormont said the capture of the ship carrying La Fayette would be legal `in whatever seas it was made'. The Amphitrite is reported to have arrived in Carolina.
Date and place: 1777 May 7 Paris.
