Folio 320: Stormont to Weymouth. Vergennes reported news of minor hostilities on the Amazon. The king of Portugal is dangerously ill. If he died, Pombal would fall and reconciliation become possible. Vergennes was not convinced that Sartine, who knew little of the sea, wanted war. He mentioned the report of an English yacht sunk by a French frigate but thought it untrue. Stormont mentioned rumours of a treaty signed by Austria, Russia and Venice to divide Turkey in Europe. Vergennes thought this untrue. Breteuil has been ordered to Vienna.
