Folio 278: Stormont to Weymouth. The ships seized by the Reprisal were not taken to Port Louis but to L'Orient. He applied to Vergennes for restitution but was told that orders had been given to the Reprisal to leave with its prizes, which it had done. Du Chaffaultwas ordered to prevent any American vessels from cruising near the coast of France. Stormont had complained that the Reprisal had been much too favourably treated at Nantes and allowed to come in and out as she wished. Vergennes said he had seen Franklin once: `il faut voir tout le monde au moins une fois'. He had rebuked him for arriving in a man-of-war and referred him to the Treaty of Utrecht, which France is determined to keep. Stormont protested in similar terms to Maurepas' friend. He encloses f.284a, which was left at his house, also ff.282, 285.
