Folio 250: Stormont to Weymouth. Vergennes feared Turkey would plunge into a war against Russia, to which she was in every way unequal. If Russia took Constantinople, it would alter the whole system of Europe. Britain must be deeply concerned. Stormont replied thatFrance could best save the situation by using her influence to persuade Turkey to fulfil her engagements to Russia but Vergennes said noone could influence the Turks, who were a rule unto themselves and acted and reasoned in a way peculiar to themselves. Religion, interwoven into the constitution was a powerful factor. Stormont explained why Britain was issuing lettres de marque. Vergennes said Portugal was recruiting, appearing to be going to attack Spain. Encloses ff.256, 257 from Constantinople.
