Folio 239: Stormont to Weymouth. 8 or 10 ships of the line are being hastily armed at Toulon, which are to join the fleet at Brest, in the hope of assembling a fleet of 30 ships including frigates, to be ready at the end of the spring. 20 battalions are ordered to Brest to work on fortifications, although a rapid embarcation would be possible. The friend close to Maurepas assured him of his continued desire for peace but caution persuades him to accede to pressure for an increase in defensive measures, which could easily become offensive under others.
