Folio 160: Stormont to Weymouth. He gave Vergennes the substance of Pombal's paper [see f.142], in which he stated that the queen regent was making a judgement on all that had passed concerning the dispute with Spain. Vergennes had news of a Portuguese attack on 2 small posts on the Orinoco river, taking Spanish prisoners. He thought the queen might be playing for time. Pombal might underestimate Florida Blanca. There appears to be no correspondence between the queen of Portugal and the king of Spain. Maurepas also spoke of Pombal playing for time.
Date and place: 1777 Feb 5 Paris.
