Folio 152: Stormont to Weymouth. He secretly hears that Maurepas, in the Conseil, made a speech about France's attitude to the rebels, which Stormont reports fully. If the rebels were victorious, they would soon take over the French and Spanish islands in the West Indies. France should not help them but stand aside, wanting Britain to win but knowing that her victory would weaken her. The king agrees and fears that a rebel victory would endanger all sovereigns.
