Folio 380: Stormont to Weymouth. He has been told that at a recent meeting of the Conseil, when discussing British arming, the king said: `I will not be defied'. `L'armament d'une si grande flotte parait fait pour me braver et je ne souffrirai pas qu'on me brave'. This idea was put to him by Estaing, who regards the arming as bluster, une rodomontade. Information from such secret channels is known to all foreign ministers, many of whom have secret and, as they think, authentic accounts of Stormont's talks with Vergennes, which are totally untrue.
Date and place: 1776 Dec 11 Paris.
