Folio 376: Stormont to Weymouth. The king of Portugal is near to death. Pombal is said to be dangerously ill. His death would change things as the king of Spain is said still to favour a reasonable accommodation. Sartine has said that within a few days there will be a fleet of observation of 12 ships of the line and 6 or 7 frigates in the road at Brest and 3 ships of the line and some frigates in the road at Toulon. Du Chaffault's fleet still waits. Spain has already received 1 million of the 11 million promised by France. Trains of artillery from the 3 bishoprics are arriving in Brest. Many thinking people are opposed to Aranda's attempts to involve France in war but there is much malevolence towards England among `les esprits', who want and expect war. Stormont believes that the inferiority of her navy, the poor state of her finance, the intrigues at court and the prudence of Maurepas make war unlikely.
