Description

Folio 335: Clark Gayton to Monteil. His letter surprises him, in view of assurances that France would give no support to the rebels. His ships have orders not to approach too near any French or Spanish possessions, except in matters of urgency, of which this was one. He cannot release the schooner but will refer the matter to his court.

Date and place: 1776 Sept 18 on HMS Antelope Port Royal Jamaica.
