Folio 253: Stormont to Weymouth. He has secret and authentic information that a treaty between Deane and Vergennes is being drawn up. The king refused to sign but then agreed to do so, if some articles were softened. Stormont does not see how he can prevent the sailing of du Chaffault's fleet. French good faith can no longer be relied on. Britain can only act on French fears and her own superior naval strength.
