Folio 227: Stormont to Weymouth. He has made good his omission [in not stressing concern at the sending of a fleet to St. Domingo, [see ff.108, 177]. Vergennes assured him that it was only for defence and the protection of trade. Stormont said that Britain's naval forces in America posed no threat to the French islands, with her force wholly of frigates and her other commitments. Vergennes denied that the fleet was to be joined by ships from Rochefort and Toulon. He said peace would continue until Britain wantonly disturbed it.
