Folio 204: Extract of secret consultations at Fort William. Letter to the honourable J. B. Chevalier, director, and council of Chandernagore. Barwell denies threatening to punish in the brutal way described and he allowed one of his servants to be publicly whipped in the same way as a servant of the French was punished. The French should not take the matter as a national insult, which was not intended. The British have every intention of protecting the rights and privileges of the French. The matters have been fully and impartially examined.
