Description

Folio 125: Stormont to Weymouth. The controller general has died. The office has been split between Taboureau, with the title of controller, and Necker, as director of the treasury and councillor of the finances. He details their different responsibilities. Necker owed his appointment to Maurepas but was not made controller general, because he is a protestant. Necker had drawn up a memorial reviewing the financial position, to which he owed his appointment. Stormont comments on the qualities of Taboureau and Necker and wonders how they will get on together. Necker will probably be able to raise loans in Holland and England but will be unable to find any economies from the court. The late controller general handed over loans at 5% and prescriptions. Necker is to be received by the king `au travail', with Maurepas but has made it a condition that Taboureau shall never be present.
