Folio 114: Stormont to Weymouth. The committee of the Conseil d'Etat has met [see f.62]. It consisted of Maurepas, St. Germain, Vergennes, Sartine, Soubize and Bertin acting for the controller general. It approved the plan, which is to prepare as soon as possible 57 or 60 men of war - ships of the line and frigates - as a protection against any surprise and for the same reason to put St. Domingo and Martinique in a proper state of defence, by supplying arms and ammunition and sending du Chaffault's squadron next month. The committee decided against sending ships to join the Spanish fleet, unless Britain showed any indication of helping Portugal. Stormont believes this information is true. He encloses f.115.
Date and place: 1776 Oct 23 Fontainebleau.
