Folio 112: Stormont to Weymouth. He reports such parts of the king's instructions to Noailles, as he has been able to discover, namely, that France sincerely desires peace, that her naval preparations are purely precautionary, that the king is willing to mediate between Spain and Portugal and France will therefore refrain from any step inconsistent with this r"le. In the event of war between Spain and Portugal in South America, France will remain strictly neutral. His information comes `through no bad channel'. Noailles may, however, have been instructed not to speak about France's naval preparations unless Weymouth raises the subject first.
Date and place: 1776 Oct 23 Fontainebleau.
