Folio 94: Stormont to Weymouth. Maurepas has told Souza that neither France nor England want a rupture and that, even now, if Pombal would make restitution, France might persuade Spain to hold back. If, however, Pombal persisted in silence, the consequences were clear and could not be avoided. Stormont said that now was the most favourable moment to put pressure on Pombal.
