Folio 82: Stormont to Weymouth. He is delighted at the victory in America. Vergennes received the news with good grace. Vergennes said Pombal seemed to be avoiding Walpole and that the king of Portugal was dangerously ill. Stormont put it to Vergennes, that, if Spain would propose a reasonable plan for agreeing limits, Pombal would end the whole dispute `d'un trait de plume'. Vergennes said Spain could not make proposals but could receive them and said Pombal had no time to lose as the Spanish fleet was ready to sail with the first fair wind. Maurepas greeted the news from America with polite surprise. He urged Britain to compel Pombal to be reasonable then there could be peace and quiet.
Date and place: 1776 Oct 16 Fontainebleau.
