Folio 50: Stormont to Weymouth. The court moves to Fontainebleau. No confirmation that the Spanish fleet has sailed. An immediate attack on Rio Janeiro is suspected. Aranda is said to have convinced all, that a French fleet should join the Spanish fleet, except Maurepas, who is delaying. Stormont is certain that France is arming but has no reliable details. He lists, however, some facts, that sailors are collecting from all parts for Toulon and Brest, that the Channel ports have been ordered to supply a quota of men and boys, that sailors are taken from merchant ships for service of the crown. He asks for instructions about what he should say at this critical time. He is eager for news of Howe's attack on New York.
Date and place: 1776 Oct 8 Paris.
