Folio 437: Stormont to Weymouth. There is coldness and misunderstanding between the king and queen. At the instigation of madame de Gramont, the queen became importunate and showed too great a desire to govern. The king is said to have said to her: this country canhave but one master `et ce maître, madame, ce sera moi'. She wanted to replace St. Germain by one of Choiseul's party. It looks as if Maurepas showed the king the paper described in f.427.
Date and place: 1776 Aug 28 Paris.
