Folios 417-426: Stormont to Weymouth. He fears that Lavradio's interpretation of Pombal's orders will not avoid hostilities. Vergennes continues to be critical of Pombal. Lavradio's orders make no mention of restitution. Maurepas said France had done all in her power torestrain Spain. Britain must use her influence with Pombal. Stormont told Souza that, if Pombal did not take the opportunity at once to order restitution back to July 1775, the situation was irretrievable once hostilities started and could not be confined to America.
