Folio 414: Stormont to Weymouth. Count Branicki, great general of Poland, has protested to Vienna at Russian behaviour in Poland. Breteuil [French ambassador in Vienna] urged French intervention against Russia. Maurepas is against this. Stormont hears of jealousy between France and Austria over Austrian trade at Ostend. Preparations continue at Rochefort, Brest and Toulon, including the baking of large quantities of sea-biscuit. Alarming reports give France 54 ships of the line ready for manning in the Spring but her finances remain precarious. The queen is to take bark for her ague.
Date and place: 1776 Aug 28 Paris.
