Folio 30: St. Paul to Weymouth. He discussed the Portuguese issue with Vergennes, each reiterating the desire of his court for a negotiated peace, consistent with honour. Vergennes showed concern at military preparations by both Spain and Portugal. Spain's intentions remain concealed. St. Paul has always supported Portugal, while he is privately critical of Pombal over the seizure of the 2 Spanish ships. In a postscript he reports that Turgot survives, with the support of the king, who is his only supporter. He refers to the Richelieu case. He encloses 3 of St. Germain's last ordinances [missing here] and a list of promotions [f.34].
Date and place: 1776 Apr 24 Paris.
