Folio 164: Stormont to Weymouth. Vergennes said the king was disappointed at the unfriendly attitude of Britain over the Newfoundland fisheries. The discussion covered the same ground as in f.142. Stormont stressed the observance of the treaties. Vergennes thought that treaties should be interpreted liberally. Stormont said that the strictest orders would be sent to all officers to ensure treaty rights to the French fishermen. Vergennes asked for a copy of the orders.
