Folio 136: Stormont to Weymouth. He showed Vergennes papers from Walpole and Pinto and said he thought it reasonable of Pombal to want the papers advanced by both sides in a dispute to be as similar as possible, and that each side should be in step with the other. Vergennes defended the Spanish point of view but thought the differences over procedure could easily be removed. It is reported that Pombal, in conversation with Blosset, spoke of Grimaldi as his enemy, a bigoted Jesuit, who wanted revenge on those who had begun the destruction of the order. They then discussed the possibility of negotiations between Spain and Portugal taking place at a congress in Paris, the points of view of France and Britain and the possible mediation of both. He is seeing Vergennes again on Friday.
Date and place: 1776 Feb 21 Paris.
