Folio 248: Stormont to Weymouth. He reports on the French court. Maurepas now has free access to the king and a secret communication between his apartment and the king's closet. St. Germain's reforms are about to be published. Turgot's position is precarious. Many of his projects are thought to be ingenious but impracticable. His enemies include the king's brothers and the king has twice refused to see him. Eon, now generally believed to be a woman, will soon be allowed to return to France and, on giving up all his ministerial papers, will have a pension and be allowed to wear the cross of St. Louis, though in woman's clothes. Monsieur Cromol du Bourg is a possible successor to Turgot. The retirement of Miromésnil is probable.
Date and place: 1775 Dec 20 Paris.
