Folio 199: Stormont to Weymouth. Colonel Taube has been given the necessary passports to go to the Isle de Ré. He encloses [?ff.165, 167]. He discussed America with Vergennes, who assured him that France gave no help or encouragement to the rebels. Stormont showed him letters indicating similar assurances from Spain and asked that France would give the same orders to French ports forbidding the export of arms and munitions to America [see f.161]. Stormont mentioned an American ship in L'Orient loading saltpetre [? see f.182 the Polly]. Vergennes distrusted Pombal. He denied any knowledge of arming at Cadiz. Stormont urged Souza that Portugal should reach a settlement with Spain, warning him `never to forget how much untoward business we had upon our hands'.
