Folio 179: Stormont to Weymouth. The assembly of the clergy is meeting. The archbishop of Paris, `with that wild enthusiasm and bigotry for which he has long been famous', proposed petitioning the king to abolish the regulation forbidding men under 21 and women under 18 from taking religious vows and to make the age 16 for both. This was opposed by the archbishop of Toulouse and many moderates but was carried by 35 votes to 33. The petition is unlikely to succeed. The general climate of opinion is against convents. Many would like to see France cast off the shackles of Rome. Turgot is said to be waiting for the assembly to close before bringing forward new edicts, one in favour of protestants and legalizing their marriages. St. Germain has already made changes in the military establishment to come into force in peace time.
Date and place: 1775 Nov 29 Paris.
