Folio 103: Stormont to Rochford. Report of conversation with Vergennes, who referred to a letter from Ossun, of which he is sending an extract to Guines to show to Rochford. It refers to a letter from Pombal to Madrid. Vergennes agreed with Stormont on the need to facilitate a settlement [between Spain and Portugal see f.45]. But Stormont has just heard of the seizing by Portugal of the merchant ship Aurora with cargo to the value of 1,500,000 piastres. He queries Rochford's distrust of Souza, who told him that Spain would not start war without France, who would not join in. Stormont had showed his appreciation of the help given by Robecq to the shipwrecked Hanoverian troops at Dunkirk. He finds Vergennes friendly and apparently anxious to preserve peace.
Date and place: 1775 Nov 9 Fontainebleau.
