Folio 65: Stormont to Rochford. Referring to a letter sent to Guines and read to Stormont. Vergennes said he was convinced that Britain would not wish a war to arise from this spark kindling into a flame. Stormont, while agreeing, said that Britain, whatever her difficulties, would not abandon her ally Portugal. Vergennes said France would fulfill her obligations but it was most important that France and Britain, together or separately, prevent war between Spain and Portugal. He said that Portugal had insulted the king of Spain and Stormont said Spain's reply was offensive to Portugal and that Britain must judge whether there had been any infraction of the Treaty of Paris, which Britain had guaranteed.
