Folio 274: St. Paul to Rochford. He will support Hankey's claim. He believes that someone answering to the description of Hyam Baronne did apply to him for a passport but disappeared without it. Melilla is reported besieged by 30,000 Moors but he is assured that the Moroccans have written to the governor of Ceuta desiring peace and that Spain will agree with conditions. The same source reports Portuguese approaches to Spain to settle differences in Paraguay. These were coldly received in view of the safe arrival of reinforcements in Buenos Aires and suspicion of Pombal [? see f.255]. The troops back from Algiers are now quartered on the coast between Cartagena and Alicante. The protestants in France, estimated at 3 million, have offered 20 million livres in exchange for freedom of worship, liberty to build places of public worship and the recognition of their marriages and other church ceremonies as valid. It is thought that only the last will be granted, for a proportion of the sum offered. Encloses f.278.
