Folio 274: Stormont to Rochford. Reports conversations with Vergennes about Spain and Portugal. Vergennes said Portugal was alleged to be encroaching in America and said that, if Spain had any plan for war, he knew nothing of it. He speaks as a minister with no real power beyond his brief. The Spanish ambassador has had an audience with the king and met Maurepas. The talks concerned the election of a pope favourable to France and Spain and the defeat of the Jesuits. Masserano recovers slowly.
Date and place: 1774 Oct 26 Fontainebleau.
