Folio 245: Rochford to Stormont. Pinto [Portuguese minister to Britain] reports on forces recently sent from Cadiz and San Lucar to Buenos Aires, with a view to conquering the south of the Brazils. Pinto called Spain a declared and unjust aggressor and France a dissimulated one. He provided evidence of France and Spain combining to detach Portugal from her alliance with Britain and force her into the Family Compact or suffer the loss of Brazil. France will hold back in order to emerge as mediator, who will not permit the union of Portugal with Spain. Rochford believes that France does not want to be drawn into a war but will have to be, if Spain starts it. Stormont must make clear Britain's support for Portugal.
