Folio 183: Stormont to Rochford. The duc d'Orléans has presented a memorial to the king, signed by all the princes of the blood except La Marche, in favour of the abolition of the present Parlement and of the ceremony of the cataphalque. The chancellor has lost credit with the king over the intrigues against Sartine. If Choiseul were to return to power, it is believed that he would restore the old Parlement, supported by the queen. Her credit grows but may not last. Stormont discusses the position of Maurepas and the reactions of various factions to the appointment of Vergennes as foreign minister. The real character of the king has not yet been revealed. He is surrounded by a court, which is a scene of jealousy, cabal and intrigue.
Date and place: 1774 June 22 Paris.
