Folio 181: Stormont to Rochford. He comments on French policy towards Sweden and does not think France will risk war with Britain. If war did break out, it would be at the instigation of Spain. Aiguillon, whose ability is respected even by his enemies, will try to improve the army and the controller will be obliged to give him whatever money he asks for. He comments on the state of French finances, on inefficiency and extravagance and sees no way in which France would afford a war. Kaunitz and Mercy support strong ties with France and Aiguillon `plumes himself' on close relations with Spain. He quotes Aiguillon as saying: `I have always professed a particular regard for England and yet yours is the only court that is not perfectly satisfied with me'. Stormont will try to find out, if France is abetting the rebellious spirit in the colonies. Aiguillon had talked about the situation in America. Stormont urges firmness by Britain. Monteil will sail direct to Pondicherry.
