Folio 206: St. Paul to Rochford. Monteynard is to go but will be well treated. He comments on some no longer likely to succeed him. Aiguillon is thought to be the most likely, uniting the war office with foreign affairs. The artillery under Condé will be separated from the war office. There are fears that, if the Russians lose ground, the Austrians might act against the Turks. The emperor plans to visit France next summer. Russia and Prussia are still close friends. The Officer general and inspector of artillery, Villepaton, is to appeal against the sentence of the court marshal of Bellegarde [f.27]. St. Paul has heard something hardly credible, that Choiseul did not want war, believed he could have stayed in office, if he had engaged in one but settled the Falkland issue peacefully. The prospects for Guines are poor.
