Folio 78: St. Paul to [Rochford]. Aranda [Spanish ambassador], after a chilly start, is now close to Aiguillon, who mentioned a `tacit convention' that, after a time, we would abandon the Falklands. St. Paul denied this. Spain thought France too submissive to Britain. France and Spain are sounding out Vienna and France is trying to cajole Russia. St. Paul does not think Czernichew is involved in any intrigue. He refers to Durand and his aim to counter-act Panin and to the release of Repnin's brother. Sweden wants a further subsidy. Prussia is nervous. Guines' position is worsening, due to his lawsuit. He may lose his post unless Britain says it wants him back. When a powder magazine exploded at Abbeville, 100 houses were demolished or damaged and there were many casualties.
Date and place: 1773 Nov 10 Paris.
