Folio 161: St. Paul to Rochford. Aiguillon has denied any connection by France with the French traders at Arguin and Portendie. They were smugglers. The Holstein affair is settled between Russia and Denmark. The Spanish ambassador, count d'Aranda, has arrived. Doria, the new nuncio, is expected in 3 weeks. The Swedish ambassador is to try to get Viry under the influence of Aiguillon. He refers to a suit against Guines. The court is full of intrigue. Aiguillon spends more time on it than on foreign affairs. The treaty being negotiated with Sweden is of commerce not of subsidy. The comte and comtesse de Province received foreign ministers at the Tuileries.
Date and place: 1773 Sept 8 Paris.
