Folio 138: St. Paul to Rochford. After the Festival of St. Louis most of the foreign ministers left Compiègne. The king will stay until August 30th because of the illness of madame Adelaide. St. Paul will take up the case of Mr. Roberts' daughter. This may deter protestants from sending their children to be educated in France. He thinks a treaty with Sweden is pending. The marriage of the chevalier du Barry to madomoiselle Tumel from Languedoc has been brought about by the comte de Broglie in order to ingratiate himself with `the Lady'. He is a formidable enemy of Britain. The Bull for the destruction of the Jesuits reached Compiègne on August 19th. It has been made worthwhile for the unwilling Pope. The king of Naples gives up Benevento and the French king Avignon.
