Folio 186: Stormont to Rochford. He informed Aiguillon that, in view of his assurance of the `cessation totale' at Toulon, Britain had ordered the reduction of her naval forces to peace establishment. They discussed the possibility of the Danish fleet entering the Mediterranean. Stormont comments that Choiseul was the main author of the Russo-Turkish was and that it is to the credit of Vergennes that he had warned France of the consequences. Aiguillon is thought to be worried at failing to oust the controller general and to be in the bad books of `the lady' for not supporting some of her recommendations for the household of the comte d'Artois. But if Aiguillon were succeeded by the comte de Broglie, the peace of Europe would be in greater danger. Birkbeck reports that the suspension of arming at Toulon may have left the resumption of arming as a possibility.
