Description (What the record is about)
-
Folio 77: Stormont to Rochford. Stormont had explained to Aiguillon why Britain was maintaining her armament. Aiguillon had heard that Russia planned to take Gotland, to annoy Sweden, but Stormont did not believe this, nor that Russia wanted war, while fighting Turkey. Aiguillon admitted receiving strong assurances from Panin, who was on good terms with prince Orlov, and he said that the commanders of the Russian and Turkish armies had agreed not to commence hostilities until receiving letters from their courts. Stormont believes that Britain's firmness has deterred France but advise humouring French pride by not protesting too much about the Toulon fleet. He recommends letting the whole matter die down. Encloses f.82, from a dependable source, about Spain's forces.
Date and place: 1773 Apr 27 Paris.
