Folio 11: Stormont to Rochford. After further long discussion with Aiguillon, less cordial than usual, about Russia, Sweden, French naval arming and Britain's declared reaction, both professed a strong desire for peace. Although Aiguillon reiterated that the Toulon fleet was only for exercises. Stormont believes its purpose is to attack Russia in the Archipelago or to threaten to do so. Aiguillon said Sweden, France's ally, was in danger of being crushed, while Britain's friends in the North had superiority. Stormont replied that, if `in the present critical conjuncture', France intended to exert her influence as a maritime power, Britain would exert hers. He describes Aiguillon's way of arguing and his own calm firmness. He thinks Aiguillon will not risk war and refers to his position at court.
