Folio 195: Stormont to Rochford. Aiguillon confirmed that a fleet was being prepared at Toulon for exercises and asked if Britain intended to lock all France's ships in their ports. France would never desert her ally Sweden. Stormont had warned that, if France had a fleet in the Mediterranean, Britain would send one too and Aiguillon admitted that the Toulon fleet might go to Sweden. No news from Spain. France may try to deter Russia from attacking Sweden by threatening her position in the Mediterranean. Stormont believes that, if Britain it seen to be preparing and strong, Aiguillon will not risk his own position with the king, although there is strong opinion in favour of Sweden in many quarters.
Date and place: 1773 Apr 7 Paris.
