Folio 166: Stormont to Richford. A dependable source reported that, in a Conseil held a week ago, Aiguillon said that Sweden had asked for help by force of arms, that Holland would help and that Britain would not oppose. There was opposition for fear of starting a general war but Aiguillon won the day. He had said that 12 ships of the line could be ready in a month, carrying 7,000 sailors. Stormont will again make clear Britain's position. Estaing has offered to lead the expedition. No ships are reported arming at Brest but 12 or 13 at Toulon, under pretence of manoeuvres. He comments on the unpopularity of Aiguillon.
