Description

Folio 242: St. Paul to Rochford. Aiguillon referred to the action of Nozière and Dufy de Montreal [f.189]. St. Paul takes note of [?f.220]. (He refers to Rochford's letter numbered 12 but appears to refer to letter number 13, folio 220) Aiguillon is known to the diplomatic corps sometimes to forget what he has said and to misconstrue and misrepresent what is said to him. A royal ordonnance commands the States of Brittany to register a memorial from Fitzjames, which accuses them of calumny against Aiguillon. Fitzjames wishes to force them to retract all accusations against Aiguillon. A certain Favier, who worked in Poland and Russia as secretary and was employed by Choiseul as a spy, has been recalled by Aiguillon. The courts of Berlin and Vienna remain cold towards each other. Count Branicki, friend of the king of Poland, has arrived and will go to Madrid. Aiguillon fears that, one peace is made with Turkey, Russia will attack Sweden, helped by Denmark. Russia is reported to have sunk Turkish ships off Patras carrying troops against Ali Bey in Syria. Zinoview, Russian minister to Spain, is passing through. St. Paul refers to the new Africa company, named the Compagnie de Gorée [? see f.184]. He reports on court intrigues and writes about Aiguillon in complimentary terms, as he is sure his letters are opened. The sand-bank at Calais will be cleared.
