Folio 220: Rochford to St. Paul. He is to contradict any reports given out by Aiguillon that Britain and France are acting closely together in Europe, although both countries broadly support the same ends. Guines is ashamed of France's `chétive' role in Europe and also blames Britain for permitting the partition of Poland. Rochford had told Guines that there was little Britain could do and that France was more closely affected. St. Paul was to tell Aiguillon that Britain would dislike Russia retaining an island in the Archipelago.
Date and place: 1772 Dec 11 St James'.
