Description

Folio 199: Separate and private instructions from the king to Stormont. It refers to the observance of treaties. He is to watch closely France's relations with Austria, Austria's relations with Prussia and Russia and French attempts to prolong the war between Russia and Turkey. He will keep close watch on French armaments on land and sea and on her relations with Spain, since both countries naturally wish to recover, in time, their lost possessions. He will keep in close touch with the ambassador in Spain and watch for any developments from the Family Compact and for any moves towards a treaty of commerce between France and Portugal. He will be vigilant towards Northern Europe and French policies there, also the interests of protestants in the Empire. He will report how far France supports the pretender and on France's financial position. It lists outstanding issues, Dunkirk, French activities in the East Indies, money owed by the Compagnie des Indes for prisoners of war, clandestine communications with French Canadians and fishing disputes off Newfoundland. He will report on the situation at the French court.
